Benefits of PCB Assemblies
Printed Circuit Board Assembly service
At the heart of electronic devices lies the printed circuit board assembly, without which electronics manufacturing would be impossible. The demand for PCB assembly is on the rise, driven by the following benefits:
Compact Size
In PCBs, copper tracks are favored over wires, resulting in lighter and more compact connections. This makes the printed circuit boards lightweight and smaller in size.
Save Time
While conventional methods may be time-consuming when joining components, PCB assembly stands out for its efficiency. It requires significantly less time to assemble all the components, making it a faster and more time-efficient process.
Lower Cost
Cost plays a crucial role in electronic device manufacturing. To ensure proper functionality, it’s essential to have well-designed and thoroughly tested circuit boards. The good news is that when produced in mass quantities, these boards become highly affordable, helping to keep overall costs down.
Easy to repair
Identifying and dealing with failed or damaged components is a breeze. You can quickly spot the problem and easily replace or repair the faulty component, ensuring smooth functionality.
Low Noise
Printed circuit boards offer reduced noise, leading to enhanced device reliability. The controlled heat helps to overcome electrical noise, ensuring stable performance.
Types of PCB Assembly
- Single-sided PCBs –These PCBs are the simplest type used in straightforward systems. They have only one layer, which is the base material covered with copper. The copper layer is protected by a solder mask. These PCBs are commonly used in electronic toys.
- Double-sided PCBs – These PCBs have layers on both sides. The double-sided feature allows metal areas to be attached on both surfaces. To attach more circuits efficiently, surface mounting is preferred over through-hole mounting.
- Multi-layer PCBs – These PCBs have multiple copper layers, starting from at least two, and can go up to 4, 6, or even 12 layers. Despite having multiple layers, these circuit boards are still compact. Their flexibility allows them to accommodate the required weight and space, making them versatile and adaptable for various applications.
- Rigid PCBs – These bases are made of rigid and sturdy materials, ensuring well-organized signal paths. As a result, they are not flexible. These boards find extensive use in applications like motherboards, aerospace, and more.
- Flexible PCBs – These bases use flexible materials, which offer great advantages. They simplify circuit design, make the circuit board lighter, and take up less space, making them very convenient. However, because of their flexibility, it’s crucial to control the temperature and density during manufacturing. Though they might be a bit costly, they come with a longer guarantee period, ensuring they are dependable and long-lasting.
- Rigid-flex PCBs – Rigid-flex PCBs are a mix of Rigid PCBs and Flexible PCBs. They have multiple layers of flexible circuits connected to the rigid boards. These boards are lightweight and offer ample space for various components.
TYPES OF PCB ASSEMBLY
The entire process and functions are done by several processes, as mentioned below:
THT (Through-hole technology) assembly process
In this process, holes are made in the PCBs. After that, pin-through-hole components are inserted into these holes, and they are secured by soldering.
These include the following steps:
Step 1 – Placements of components
First, review the client’s circuit board design documents. Then, carefully arrange and secure all the components accordingly.
Step 2 – Checking and rectification
Once Step 1 is completed, connect the boards and components together. If any issues arise, they can be fixed using the soldering method.
Step 3 – Soldering
To ensure proper connections, wave soldering is performed at a high temperature. This involves moving the circuit board through liquid solder in a waving motion.
SMT (Surface-mount technology) assembly process
The SMT assembly process involves placing components on circuit boards using solder paste. It’s known for its small components compared to Through-hole technology.
Here are the steps in SMT:
Step 1- Printing
Solder paste is applied to components and boards using a special printer. A stencil helps ensure correct application.
Step 2 – Mounting
Each component is mounted on the circuit board using component reels in a machine. This process ensures speedy and accurate attachment.
Step 3 – Soldering
Reflow soldering is used to bond components to the board at high temperatures. The circuit boards pass through a furnace of around 22 feet, where the solder paste melts carefully.
Mixed Technology assembly process
The mixed technology assembly process combines Through-hole and Surface mount technologies to handle complexity.
Single side mixed
For this process, we follow these steps: Printing with solder paste, Placing surface mount devices, Reflow soldering, Placing Through-hole components, and Wave soldering.
Among the two sides, SMT One is THT
In this case, we use Surface mount adhesive, Place SMD parts, Solidify, Flip the board, Place Through-hole components, and Wave solder for the best outcome.
Double side mixed
In Double side mixed, we can use adhesive or skip it. If we opt for adhesive, we follow all the steps in Single Side and One Side SMT, One Side THT processes. For non-adhesive, we simply skip the SMT adhesive step.
